What Is It?
The
Flume: NH Teen Reader's Choice Award was created in 2005 in response to
a New Hampshire teens' request to have a book award geared towards high
school students. This award is a state-wide venture led by a
collaborative effort from school and public librarians. Each year teens
nominate titles, published within the last two years, they think deserve
to be recognized. Librarians then narrow the group of titles to a list
of 13. Teens then vote for the winning title from the list of 13.
2011 Winner: Paper Towns by John Green
Pick up your ballots in the YA section of the library. Voting open until May 7th. Please leave your completed ballots at the main desk.
Anna is looking forward to
her senior year in Atlanta, where she has a great job, a loyal best
friend, and a crush on the verge of becoming more. She is less than
thrilled about being shipped off to boarding school in Paris until she
meets Etienne St. Clair: perfect, Parisian (and English and American,
which makes for a swoon-worthy accent), and utterly irresistible. The
only problem? He’s taken, and Anna might be, too, if anything comes of
her almost-relationship back home. As winter melts into spring, will a
year of romantic near-misses end happily?
Clockwork Angel By Cassandra Clare
Clockwork Angel By Cassandra Clare
Magic is dangerous but love is more dangerous
still. When sixteen-year-old Tessa crosses the ocean to find her
brother, her destination is England. The time is the reign of Queen
Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's
Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk
the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to
ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos. A Steampunk
title not to be missed!
Dark Water By Laura McNeal
Fifteen-year-old
Pearl DeWitt and her mother live in Fallbrook, California, where it’s
sunny 340 days of the year, and where her uncle owns a grove of avocado
trees and hires migrant workers regularly. Pearl doesn’t pay much
attention to them . . . until Amiel. From the moment she sees him, Pearl
is drawn to this boy who keeps to
himself, and is mysteriously unable to talk.
After coming across Amiel’s makeshift hut near Agua Prieta Creek, Pearl
falls into a forbidden romance.
Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares By Rachel Cohn and David Levithan
“I’ve left some clues for you. If you want
them, turn the page. If you don’t, put the book back on the shelf,
please.” Lily has left a red notebook full of challenges on a favorite
bookstore shelf, waiting for just the right guy to come along and
accept its dares. But is Dash that right guy? Or are Dash and Lily only
destined to trade dares, dreams, and desires in the notebook they pass
back and forth at locations across New York? You’ll be longing for a
love (and a red notebook) of your own.
The Demon’s Lexicon By Sarah Rees Brennan
Sixteen-year-old Nick and his family have
battled magicians and demons for most of his life. When his brother,
Alan, is marked for death while helping new friends Jamie and Mae,
Nick's determination to save Alan leads him to uncover a devastating
secret. You’ll never see the surprise ending coming!
Eon: Dragoneye Reborn By Alison Goodman
Sixteen-year-old Eon has a
dream, and a mission. For years, he's been studying sword-work and
magic, toward one end. He and his master hope that he will be chosen as a
Dragoneye-an apprentice to one of the twelve energy dragons of good
fortune. But Eon has a dangerous secret. He is actually Eona, a
sixteen-year-old girl who has been masquerading as a twelve-year-old
boy. Females are forbidden to use Dragon Magic; if anyone discovers she
has been hiding in plain sight, her death is assured. When Eon's secret
threatens to come to light, she and her allies are plunged into grave
danger and a deadly struggle for the Imperial throne.
Impossible By Nancy Werlin
When seventeen-year-old Lucy discovers her
family is under an ancient curse by an evil Elfin Knight, she realizes
to break the curse she must perform three impossible tasks before her
daughter is born in order to save them both.
Marcelo in the Real World By Francisco X. Stork
Marcelo Sandoval hears music no one else can
hear; he’s on the high-functioning end of the autism spectrum. He’s
always attended a special school where his differences have been
protected. But the summer after his junior year, his father demands that
Marcelo work in his law firm's mailroom in order to experience "the
real world."There Marcelo meets Jasmine, his beautiful and surprising
coworker, and Wendell, the son of another partner in the firm. He learns
about competition and jealousy, anger and desire. But it's a picture he
finds in a file -- a picture of a girl with half a face -- that truly
connects him with the real world: its suffering, its injustice, and what
he can do to fight.
Nightshade By Andrea Cremer
Calla Tor has always known her destiny: After
graduating from the Mountain School, she’ll be the mate of sexy alpha
wolf Ren Laroche and fight with him, side by side, ruling their pack and
guarding sacred sites for the Keepers. But when she violates her
masters’ laws by saving a beautiful human boy out for a hike, Calla
begins to question her fate, her existence, and the very essence of the
world she has known. By following her heart, she might lose everything -
including her own life. Is forbidden love worth the ultimate sacrifice?
Revolution By Jennifer Donnelly
BROOKLYN: Andi Alpers is on the edge. She’s
angry at her father for leaving, angry at her mother for not being able
to cope, and heartbroken by the loss of her younger brother. Rage and
grief are destroying her, and she is forced to accompany her dad to
Paris for winter break. PARIS: Alexandrine Paradis lived over two
centuries ago. She dreamed of making her mark on the Paris stage, but a
fateful encounter with a doomed prince cast her in a tragic role. Two
girls, two centuries apart, never knowing one another, but when Andi
finds Alexandrine’s diary, she recognizes something in her words and is
moved to the point of obsession. There’s comfort and distraction for
Andi in the journal’s antique pages—until, on a midnight journey through
the catacombs of Paris, Alexandrine’s words transcend paper and time,
and the past becomes suddenly, terrifyingly present.
Ship Breaker By Paolo Bacigalupi
In
America's Gulf Coast region, where grounded oil tankers are being
broken down for parts, Nailer, a teenage boy, works the light crew,
scavenging for copper wiring just
to make quota--and hopefully live to see
another day. But when, by luck or chance, he discovers an exquisite
clipper ship beached during a recent hurricane, Nailer faces the most
important decision of his life: Strip the ship for all it's worth or
rescue its lone survivor, a beautiful and wealthy girl who could lead
him to a better life. . . a thrilling, fast-paced adventure set in a
vivid, raw, and uncertain future.
When the Game Was Ours By Larry Bird & Earvin Magic Johnson
From the moment these two players took the
court on opposing sides, they engaged in a fierce physical and
psychological battle. Their uncommonly competitive relationship came to
symbolize the most compelling rivalry in the NBA. Each pushed the other
to greatness -- together Bird and Johnson collected 8 NBA
Championships, and 6 MVP awards and helped save the floundering NBA at
its most critical time. When it started they were bitter rivals, but
along the way they became lifelong friends.
Will Grayson, Will Grayson By John Green & David Levithan
